Explanation of what an Individual Healthcare Provider Identifier (HPI-I) is and how to find it

Updated over a week ago

What is an HPI-I?

An HPI-I (Healthcare Provider Identifier – Individual) is a unique 16-digit number assigned to every healthcare practitioner in Australia. It is used to identify individual providers in electronic healthcare systems, including ePrescribing, My Health Record, and the Healthcare Identifiers (HI) Service.

Who gets an HPI-I?

All registered healthcare practitioners in Australia are automatically assigned an HPI-I by the Healthcare Identifiers Service, managed by Services Australia, once they are successfully registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

This includes (but is not limited to):

• General practitioners

• Specialists

• Nurse practitioners

• Dentists

• Pharmacists

• Optometrists

• Psychologists

• Physiotherapists

You do not need to apply separately for an HPI-I — it is generated as part of your AHPRA registration process.

Note: If you are a prescriber, you will need to provide your HPI-I to your prescribing or practice management software provider to enable eScript functionality.

When is it assigned?

Automatically upon registration with AHPRA

Once your AHPRA registration is finalised and you appear on the public register, your HPI-I is created and stored securely in the HI Service.

No need to manually apply

You only need to retrieve it if you intend to use services like eScripts or My Health Record.

How to find your HPI-I

You can locate your HPI-I using your PRODA account via HPOS (Health Professional Online Services) or request it from your practice manager or software provider if it has been previously retrieved.
